Dr A K Padhy Dental · 29 October 2026

Seeing a little blood when you brush is common, but it is not something to ignore. Bleeding gums are often an early sign that the gums need attention.

Common causes

Why it matters

If gum inflammation is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the bone that supports the teeth is gradually lost. This can lead to loose teeth and bad breath. Early gum problems are usually easier to manage.

What you can do at home

When to see a dentist

Book a check-up if your gums bleed regularly, look red or swollen, have pulled back from the teeth, or if you notice bad breath or loose teeth. A dentist can check the gums, remove tartar with scaling, and advise whether further treatment is needed.

Common questions

Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?

No. Keep brushing gently with a soft brush. Stopping lets plaque build up, which usually makes bleeding worse.

Is bleeding while flossing normal?

Light bleeding can happen when you start flossing, but if it continues after a week or two, have your gums checked.
